Transcription: Dot matrix printers provide a good quality image by building up characters and pictures using a pattern of dots. This system of printing, invented by IBM in 1957, is the commonest in use today. Early printers used nine pins to print characters. These have been superseded to a great extent by printers using 24 pins, giving a much better quality output.
